Nuclear Medicine Treatment

Paranuclear medicine treatment for thyroid cancer primarily involves radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy (I-131), which selectively destroys thyroid cancer cells by emitting radiation. It is commonly used after thyroidectomy to eliminate remaining thyroid tissue and reduce recurrence risk. Patients may undergo thyroid hormone withdrawal or receive Thyrogen injections to enhance iodine absorption. While effective, RAI therapy can have side effects like dry mouth, fatigue, and temporary fertility issues. Other nuclear medicine approaches, such as Lutetium-177 and PET-CT imaging, are emerging for advanced or iodine-resistant thyroid cancers, improving targeted treatment options.
